Getting Ready! There is so much paperwork to fill out before actually applying for a mission. Here is the picture we sent the first presidency when his papers were actually submitted. Sharp kid.
The call is FINALLY here!! I, of course, had to photograph the entire process. He was so anxious to open the envelope, but I told him he would be glad to have all these pictures one day...probably not, but someone will be glad to have the pictures!
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA!
Mom couldn't be more THRILLED he's staying in the good ol' U.S. of A.
Grant has many admirers. These three girls are at the top of that list. The other night, Anna and Leah were crying about Grant leaving. They said, "But Uncle Grant does the BEST butt bombs on the trampoline!"
The Coulams came from St. George for Thanksgiving and goodbyes. Cute little Nick.
We've all had our moments of random sadness preparing for Grant to serve. This was one of my moments...the last haircut I gave him. I take pride in making my family look beautiful. Plus, these appointments give us some time to chat and catch up. I felt sad giving that job to someone else. My words of advice: ALWAYS have a good haircut! You are representing the Lord. I will send you money for a decent haircut!
"The After"
Amanda and I would always torture this poor child with smothering affection. This is what we'd call a "Grant sandwich". He obviously loved this game! HA!
It's official! He's set apart and ready to go! President Haws asked each of us to share some thoughts with Grant before he left. Mom's advice: "You are on the Lord's errand. When you feel sad and homesick, you put on a happy face, and fight a good fight. Go out, and get to work!"
We went to Salt Lake to see Grant off. It was a quick trip, but totally worth it!
We met up with our dear friends, the Rowley's.
Checking out temple square.
Jim was one of Grant's young men leaders. Grant has nothing but the utmost respect for Jim.
BFF's together again!
Warming up with some gas station hot chocolate.
And of course, SWIMMING!
My little-big brother.
Grandma, Grandpa and Trudy came to say hi since we were so close. It was so nice to spend time with them!
I learned that Brigham Young (second president of the church) is the girl's 5th great grandfather. I was so surprised to learn that!
Our last meal together...for two years anyway.
I'm so proud of my brother! If you read the posts from the past, you can see how he's obviously a remarkable young man. He's stalwart, loyal, and kind. He will mature to manhood while he's gone. His testimony will be strengthened from experiences only a mission could provide. He'll be tried and tested, but he will prove himself worthy. During these last few weeks prior to his departure, I've had this hymn repeating in my mind...
God be with you till we meet again;
By his counsels guide, uphold you;
With his sheep securely fold you.
God be with you till we meet again.
God be with you till we meet again;
When life's perils thick confound you,
Put his arms unfailing round you.
God be with you till we meet again.
God be with you till we meet again;
Keep love's banner floating o'er you;
Smite death's threatening wave before you.
God be with you till we meet again.

WOW, you never cease to amaze me!! The blog captures it all. Little did I know that the advice I gave Grant would apply to me also, so grateful you brought it to my attention :) It will be a great 2years (hopefully fast) ;)
I love you,
Mom
Such a great post Ali! There's nothing like sending off a missionary. So exciting, yet sad. I bawled half the way home after dropping my brother at the MTC.
Grant looks fantastic and will be so great on his mission.
LOVED the Grant sandwiche pics and the haircut/advice. Your family is lucky to have you to do these beautiful family archives!
Merry Christmas!
