Memory Maker

Are you wondering if I picked this beauty up at a yard sale for 25 cents? To me, this vintage green Tupperware colander represents a lot more than its original purpose…straining liquid off pasta. Growing up my Dad never cooked. However, he has two specialties that only he can make: 1.) Caramel Popcorn and 2.) Peanut Brittle. This year (well, last year now) I was determined to have him teach me how to make both. Caramel popcorn was first on the list. He pulled out the traditional green colander, and instantly I got all warm and fuzzy inside. Memories of years passed flooded my mind. The unique thing about this colander is that it has a straining lid that goes with it. Perfect for shaking out all the unpopped kernels of corn. It was always the job of one of us kids to take the popcorn filled calendar outside and shake out the tooth-breaking kernels. Then we would dump the fluffy white corn into a Wal-Mart sack (a paper bag back in the day), and wait for the caramel to cook. While we waited, we always talked, laughed and relished in each other’s company. Some of my fondest childhood memories were with the green colander. After my Dad taught me his secrets, I was determined to get myself my own green Tupperware. The popcorn will only turn out right if I have the right “tools”. Luckily, some person in Kansas was cleaning out their cupboards. She probably stumbled on this piece of plastic…no doubt in the very back corner, and thought, “Wonder if I could get any money from this on ebay?” So now I am a proud owner of my very own memory maker. Hopefully, this little item will give my girls the same warm fuzzies that it has given to me.

What a great invention! Now I WANT one! I hate when you accidentally eat a popcorn kernel....I didn't even know about the green tupperwear invention!

I am so excited for you Alison. Now all you need is your 1/2 cup of Kay-roh (I just love how your dad says that).

I'm sitting here trying to figure out how you cooked popcorn in plastic..... then I realized you probably just mixed the caramel and popcorn in the bowl, right? Leave it to me to get all technical on your nice post. Gotta love ebay!!!

Cecilee, you pop the popcorn in a regular popper, then put it in the green bowl to shake out the kernals. THEN you have to have a huge bowl to mix the carmel and popcorn togehter. Those are the technical steps. :-)

Hmm, I might have to check e-bay for one. My mom still uses hers. I am always checking the tupperware site for anything that may be retro and that I grew up with.
