Like a Child

Ready for some action!
"I can barely smile. I'm wrapped too tight."

Raychel has been dying to make a snow angel since it snowed. Her wish finally came true.

Puffy hugs! After I got wind about the snowball fight, I ran to Goodwill to see if I could be lucky enough to find some snow pants. Not lucky enough. I ran in to Wal-Mart, and discovered they were WAY expensive! I called James and told him the price. I love my husband for many reasons, but I love him because he is not a cheap-skate. He was like, "Well, they can't go out and play without them. Just buy them, so they can have fun and stay warm." I think we were secretly SO happy Grant volunteered to do the "dirty" work. We could stay inside and enjoy it.

Stay-Puff marshmallows. The girls were bundled up so tight, they had a difficult time moving. They basically waddled all over the backyard.

Thank goodness for my little brother!! He is the best Uncle ever! He gladly volunteered to build a snowman/have a snowball fight with the girls. He is so sweet!

Snow Angels

Leah making a snowball in her oversized mittens.

The snowman building wasn't too successful because Jade kept biting and destroying all the snowballs! Look how she is ready to pounce on the snowball Grant is holding.
The other day, I was volunteering in Raychel’s class. We have had quite an impressive snowfall this past week, and Friday was the first day the weather was “warm” enough for the kids to have outdoor recess. Everyone bundled up and headed outside. There is a small hill by the kindergarten classrooms, and all the kids took turns sledding down the hill. There was so much screaming and giggling, you couldn't’t help but enjoy it. After about 20 minutes, it was time to go in and get ready to go home. As I was observing all the classroom chaos, my eye caught hold of one of the boys in the class. He had chubby, rosy cheeks, snot running down his face, and his four front teeth were missing. He turned to his friend and excitedly exclaimed, “This is the best day of my life!” I was so struck by that statement, and instantly a scripture in Mosiah came to my mind.

For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be forever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father. (Mosiah 3:19)

Later that night we went to see The Princess and the Frog at the “Movie Fee-a-ter” (as Leah calls it). Leah sat on the edge of her seat for the entire 100 minutes of the movie. Her eyes lit up with excitement when there was any kissing. She literally gasped (complete with her hand over her mouth) when the evil man was doing his evil things. I enjoyed watching her more than the movie! I just wondered to myself, when do we become old farts? When and why do we lose this vigor for life? These experiences have prompted me to be a better “child” to my Heavenly Father. I especially need to be “full of love”, and enjoy the simple pleasures the Lord gives to me each day. I’m so thankful for my daughters who are constant reminders of all that is good in this world.

Like always, a great post! What a sweet and genuine remark from the boy in Raychel's class. Isn't it wonderful how, when you regularly read the scriptures, the Lord brings those things to mind when you lease expect it and teaches you. Then you teach others. Thank you for sharing that insight! Dad

You are so good at making posts that make me cry. Thanks a lot. :) I think of that scripture most Sundays in Jr Primary. There is so much we can learn from kids. If I can stop being annoyed with them long enough to realize that they really are sweet spirits of our Heavenly Father

Dear Alison! Thank you for your wonderful insight. I love reading your blog. So true that we need to be more like the sweet and wonderful children all around us.

Bless your brother Grant. I wish we had an uncle to play in the snow. My guilt is building as Jenna has asked about making a snowman for 3 days in a row. I can never get outside with the baby and plus it has been like 3 degrees here. Glad your girls got to have some fun out there.

So awesome!! I agree, I love how children find such joy in the simple things. I think we would all be better if we became more childlike...no judgment, no guile. Thanks for reminding us. Hope you guys have a happy holiday :)
